SURVIVING THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE EDITOR

One of the most popular events in 2013 was the panel discussion which looked at ‘The Changing Role of the Editor’. Chaired by Sara Cremer, CEO of Redwood, the event saw panellists and audience discuss how an editor’s remit has changed in recent times from merely overseeing a print publication to working with new content platforms, tighter budgets, centralised teams and across various strands of the business to juggle a far wider range of responsibilities and projects than was the case even five years ago. The event proved so provocative that we immediately resolved to host a follow-up event, to tackle some of the many issues thrown up that night that we didn’t have chance to fully cover. That event took place on March 10 at the Drury Club in Covent Garden.

The event was hosted by Louise Court, former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, who shared some of her experiences on the ever-changing media landscape across Cosmo’s various brands. The main part of the evening, though, was an open forum for BSME members to exchange experiences and lessons – good and bad – of today’s working environment in an open, off-the-record discussion.
